We depend on our cars every day. Most of the time, they get us from point A to point B - and back again - with no fuss and no muss. Every now and then, however, bad things happen. Batteries die, starters fail, engines overheat, and more.
You seldom have to guess as to whether or not your Volvo engine is overheating. That's the whole point of warning lights in the driver display. If an overly high temperature is sensed in the cooling system for your engine, in the driver display center, expect to see an illuminated warning symbol signifying a message conveying "engine temperature high - stop safely". (Other messages may apply, see below.)
Driver Display Symbols
Depending on the symbol you see in the driver display, various messages can be conveyed:
- A thermometer inside a circle can mean "gearbox overheated/hot/cooled". Whatever recommendation is given, follow it.
- A radiator means that the "coolant level is low". Follow the given recommendations.
- A thermometer above wavy lines means that the "temperature in the engine is too high". Recommendations should be followed.

An Engine That Overheats
So, you now know how you will be made aware of whether the engine in your Volvo is overheating.
Overheating doesn't always happen for no reason or due to faulty engine parts. Your drive system and engine may overheat if you're operating in a hot climate, driving in hilly terrain, driving hard, and more. Here's some useful information that applies to engine overheats:
- After a hard drive, do not immediately shut off your engine.
- Temporarily, the air conditioning may be switched off if your car overheats.
- An alternative gearshift problem will be chosen if, in the gearbox, overheating occurs. Your warning message will have everything to do with a transmission, rather than radiator problems.
- Stop your car and switch the engine off if you see a warning that says, "engine coolant level low", or "engine temperature high". Either way you'll be advised to turn the engine off. Follow the instructions.
- Safely stop your car and, at idling speed, allow the engine to run for several minutes if you see the warning message "engine temperature high - stop safely". This will provide a cooldown period.
- If you're driving in a hot climate, from in front of the grill, remove any auxiliary lamps that may be in place.
- Temporarily, you may notice limited engine power in the event of overheating.
