One question that car dealers and automotive service technicians hear all the time is this: "On my Volvo, how long should the brake discs last?" The thing about this question is that any number of factors weigh in when you're talking about brake wear. We'll touch on that shortly. Generally speaking, however, if you drive sensibly and keep your brakes well maintained, from one set of brakes you could get as much as 80,000 miles.

What affects Volvo brake disc wear? Here are some factors that could help determine how long the brakes on your Volvo last. Your brakes may fail or fade if:

  • You have brake parts that are defective (warped calipers or rotors)
  • Your brake booster is bad
  • There is leaking fluid or a loss of brake fluid
  • The master cylinder is rusted
  • You have faulty or damaged brake hoses
  • In the braking system, there is debris, dust, dirt, grease, water, or oil (might need a brake line flush)
  • From overheating and overuse, the brake pads are damaged
  • Rather than changing the brakes or having them maintenanced when they should, you use them past that point
  • Failing to check for damage and/or wear signs on your brakes

How You Drive Affects Your Brakes

You and your driving habits have a lot to do with how your brakes wear. Here are some things - which are in your control - that can cause premature wear on your brakes:

  • Carrying excess weight (harder to stop your car)
  • High-speed travel (you have to press harder on your brakes to slow or stop)
  • Between the front of your car and the vehicle ahead of you, not leaving enough space (so you're constantly braking)
  • If applicable, failure to make good use of your lower gears
  • Jackrabbit stops

Signs That Your Discs (Brakes) Are Worn

The following signs can point to the fact that your discs (brakes), are wearing - either prematurely or otherwise. If you notice any of these signs, it's time to get your brakes serviced:

  • When braking, you hear a grinding sound
  • Your brake discs are warped (when braking, you feel vibration or bumping)
  • A reduction in brake performance
  • You notice less response when you use your brake pedal
  • When driving, the steering wheel is wobbling
