Is the key for your Volvo car working as it should? If not, it may be time to replace its battery. Keep in mind that all batteries have to be replaced from time to time to keep your key in top working condition. The service life of your battery, and therefore your key, will depend on factors such as how often it is used. In this article, we share with you a step-by-step guide on changing your Volvo key battery.

Is It Time to Change Your Battery?

You will know it's time to change your Volvo key battery when you experience any of the following:

  • The information symbol on your key is illuminated and it displays "Car key battery low" on the display
  • The locks on your car do not react to signals within 65 feet - when that is the case, try moving closer and trying again

Keep in mind that the battery in a buttonless key, known as a key tag, cannot be replaced. You will need to get a replacement from an authorized Volvo workshop. Another important thing to note is that discharged key tags should not be disposed of - instead, you should return them to an authorized Volvo workshop. They key must also be deleted from your car as it is still possible to unlock and start your vehicle via backup start.

Changing the Battery of Your Volvo Key

Follow the below steps to change the battery of your Volvo car key:

  • First, ensure that you are holding your key with the Volvo logo facing up and towards you. Then, slide the button at the bottom of your key towards the right. From there, you should be able to slide the casing on the front of your key upwards, allowing you to lift it up and off your key.
  • With the help of a screwdriver, turn the battery clock anticlockwise. Stop when the markings are at "OPEN" and lift the cover up.
  • Remove the battery inside and replace it with the new battery with the + sign facing upwards. You may wish to avoid touching new batteries with your bare hands as this can impede their function.
  • Press the battery down and slide it underneath the two plastic catches to secure it.
  • Once you have made sure the battery is secure, refit the battery cover and stop at the "CLOSE" marking.
  • Reposition the key casing. You will know when it has been securely refitted because you will hear a clicking sound.
  • You are done!
