We don't usually think too much about our windscreen. It is always when we are driving and we tend to forget about it because it doesn't cause much trouble. However, it is very important that your windshield remains in good condition. If it needs to be replaced, it has to be done correctly to ensure the safety of both you and your passengers. Read on to learn more about how to change your Volvo windscreen!

Steps To Changing Windscreen

Here are the steps to follow to change your Volvo windscreen:

  • Remove any plastic moldings from around the windshield

Make sure to remove any clips that are holding the molding in place. These clips may release in many different ways. If you damage them, it means that you have to replace them. They can be cheap, but some can be expensive too. Plus, some of them are hard to find.

  • Analyze how to separate the windshield

The pinch-weld is the area at the front where various metal components are welded and attached together. This gives the structure and frame for the windshield. To take out the windshield, you have to cut it from the pinch-weld. This can be from the outside or inside of the vehicle using a razor or knife.

  • Cut the urethane

The urethane is a strong yet flexible adhesive.

  • Remove the windshield from the car

This should be done with the help of two people. First, open the front door on either side of the car. Then reach one arm in to push the glass away from the pinch-weld. Take hold of the glass from outside of the car and lift it off from the pinch-weld.

Prepare The Pinch-Weld

  • Clean away any dirt using a brush and plain water.
  • Trim off any excess urethane using a razor.
  • Remove rust from the pinch-weld.
  • Tape the area around the spot.

Install The New Windshield

  • Apply a primer to the frit band

The frit band is the black band located around the perimeter of the windshield. The primer serves to prepare the frit band to take in the urethane molecules.

  • Apply the urethane with an electric caulking gun

If you don't have a caulking gun, you can buy one at the hardware store.

  • Install the windshield

Align the top bottom and sides carefully. Then, set the windshield on top of the pinch-weld.

  • Allow the urethane to set properly

Driving before the urethane has completely set is very dangerous. Depending on which type of urethane is used, it can take between 1 and 24 hours for it to set. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to allow for a safe driving experience.
