The vehicles of yesteryear had few to no warning lights - sometimes referred to as idiot lights. Today, however, warning systems in vehicles are high tech and involve all sorts of possibilities. Your vehicle can warn you if you're straying from your lane, too close to something behind or in front of you, if your tires are slipping on the pavement, if your engine is overheating, and much, much more.

The good thing about some warning lights is that they can give you a heads up as to whether or not a part or system needs repair or replacement. Without warning lights, a system or part could completely fail and you'd be left in a pretty tough predicament.

Speaking of tires slipping on the pavement, if your Volvo slip indicator comes on, it means just that. You are not experiencing the kind of traction you should be experiencing - your tires are slipping.

If that indicator light comes on, what should you do?

Slip Indicator Light - What Does It Mean?

If you aren't experiencing proper traction, and your tires are slipping, this indicator light could come on. To indicate that TRAC (traction control) and/or VSC (vehicle stability control) are operating, a flashing slip indicator light comes on. If those systems are operating, they are doing so to regain traction. There may be a malfunction in the VSC/TRAC system if the light stays on steadily. In that case, you should get your vehicle checked out by a certified technician.

As an example, if your tires were slipping on a patch of ice, there is every possibility that your slip indicator light might temporarily come on and flash. Once the danger has passed, the indicator light should extinguish. A light that stays on should be checked out by a certified mechanic or Volvo technician.

What to Do When You Notice the Light

The system involved and the indicator light itself should reset once:

  • You're on stable ground or
  • When you restart the engine

On certain automobiles, a TRAC button exists and can usually be found on the main console dashboard. By hitting this button, you may be able to turn off the light.

Repair and/or Replacement Possibilities

If the slip indicator light stays on, there could be a number of problems that exist. Regardless of what the issue is, you need to get your vehicle checked out by a certified technician. Here are some of the things that might be wrong if the indicator light stays on:

  • There may be damaged wiring
  • Your ABS control unit may be defective
  • ABS rings may be faulty
  • Wheel sensors may be broken and more
