About Wards Island, NY
Wards Island does not have the best stories about its past. In fact, it has a dark history due to the fact that the island was once used for burying relocated dead bodies from Madison Square Park and Bryant Park potters fields. Over 100,000 bodies were believed to be moved in the island. Aside from being a burial site, it is also home to the biggest hospital complex in the world back in the 1950s. The State Emigrant Refuge was a hospital for destitute immigrants. There was also a rest home for war veterans and two asylums.
Now, Wards Island has the NYC Fire Department training academy. Several structures were built to stimulate different environments that the firefighters meet within the city.
